Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts through Things 3022
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts through Things"
The poet broods in secret like a small hidden marsh with nowhere to flow. Continuing the hidden marsh of the preceding poem, it depicts a heart holding feelings that have no outlet.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "yukue nami," means "having nowhere to go."
Line two, "komoreru onu no," means "of a small hidden marsh," and the lines up to here form an introduction leading to "shitamoi."
Line three, "shitamoi ni," means "in secret thought," read "shitamoi" in the kana line.
Line four, "ware zo monomou," means "I brood," with "zo" concluded by the attributive "monomou."
Line five, "konogoro no aida," means "all through these days," ending on a noun.
