消ぬべき恋も我れはするかも
Roma-ji

Yūbe okite ashita wa kenuru shiratsuyu no kenubeki koi mo are wa suru kamo

English Translation
Like the shining dew
that falls at evening
and is gone by dawn,
a love that makes me fade away
is the love I'm living now
Meaning
Like white dew that settles at evening and is gone by dawn, my love is one that makes me feel I might fade away.
Commentary
Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts through Things 3039

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts through Things"
The poet's love feels about to make the poet vanish, like white dew that settles at evening and disappears by morning. Following the wish in the preceding poem to become dew, it expresses the felt experience of a love that seems ready to vanish like dew.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.

Line one, "yūbe okite," means "settling at evening," taking up line three of the preceding poem.
Line two, "ashita wa kenuru," means "vanishing by morning," the same as line four of the preceding poem.
Line three, "shiratsuyu no," means "of the white dew," and the lines up to here form an introduction leading to "kenu," to vanish.
Line four, "kenubeki koi mo," means "a love that seems to make me vanish."
Line five, "are wa suru kamo," means "is the love I am living."
