Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts through Things 3057
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts through Things"
Treading through a moor of low reeds with a heavy heart, the poet gazed toward the house of the girl he loves. It portrays the aching heart of a man who cannot meet her and gazes at her house from afar. A variant gives the last two lines as "imo ga ie no atari mitsu."
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "asajihara," is a moor of low reeds.
Line two, "chifu ni ashi fumi," means "treading among the reeds."
Line three, "kokorogumi," means "heavy-hearted."
Line four, "aga mou kora ga," means "of the girl I love," read "aga mou kora ga" in the kana line.
Line five, "ie no atari mitsu," means "I gazed toward her house."
