Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts through Things 3071
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts through Things"
Like the long trailing vine on Mount Ōe, the poet vows to have no heart that would break off their bond. Continuing the vine of the preceding poem, it entrusts an unchanging heart to the length of the vine.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "Tanibaji no," means "of the road to Tanba," read "Tanibaji" in the kana line.
Line two, "Ōe no yama no," means "of Mount Ōe" in Kyoto Prefecture.
Line three, "sanakazura," the trailing vine, and the lines up to here form an introduction leading, through the long-continuing vine, to "taemu," to break off. It continues the vine of the preceding poem.
Line four, "taemu no kokoro," means "a heart that would break off."
Line five, "waga omowanaku ni," means "I do not have," the same final line as poem 3058 in this book.
