Book Twelve Dialogue Poems 3104
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Dialogue Poems"
A man answers the preceding poem's reproach: he has thought a thousand times of coming, but the many passers-by keep him only longing. He explains that his silence is due not to lack of feeling but to others' eyes.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "awamu to wa," means "to meet you."
Line two, "chitabi omoedo," means "though I think of it a thousand times."
Line three, "arigayou," means "constantly coming and going," modifying "hitome," people's eyes.
Line four, "hitome o ōmi," means "because there are so many eyes."
Line five, "koitsutsu zo oru," means "I go on longing," the same final line as poems 2901 and 3030 in this book.
