Book Twelve Dialogue Poems 3109
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Dialogue Poems"
A man laments that, though he loves his beloved deeply, gossip has made his visits falter. With the woman's reply in the next poem, it forms a question-and-answer pair.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "nemokoro ni," means "with all my heart."
Line two, "omou wagimo o," means "my darling whom I love."
Line three, "hitogoto no," means "of people's gossip."
Line four, "shigeki ni yorite," means "because it is so thick."
Line five, "yodomu koro kamo," means "these days my visits falter," using "yodomu" for stalled visits, as in poems 2988 and 3019 in this book.
