English Translation
Do not grieve so much,
so bitterly, for my sake;
I never said

we never more would meet
Meaning
Do not grieve so bitterly over me; I never said that in the end we would never meet again.
Commentary
Book Twelve Dialogue Poems 3116

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Dialogue Poems"
A woman consoles the man grieving at news of her marriage, asking him not to grieve so for her sake, since she never said they would never meet again. It forms a question-and-answer pair with the preceding poem.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.

Line one, "waga yue ni," means "because of me."
Line two, "itaku na wabi so," means "do not grieve so much," with "na ... so" prohibitive. The poem pauses here.
Line three, "nochi tsui ni," means "in the end, finally," the same words as the opening of poem 3040 in this book.
Line four, "awaji to iishi," means "that I said we would not meet."
Line five, "koto mo aranaku ni," means "there was no such thing," the same final line as poem 2889 in this book.
