Book Twelve Thoughts Arising on Journeys 3149
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Thoughts Arising on Journeys"
A woman sings that though she cannot know what lies ahead, out of love she has come with the man over the mountain road. It conveys both the anxiety and the devotion of a woman accompanying a traveler.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "azusayumi," is a pillow word for "sue," the end.
Line two, "sue wa shiranedo," means "though I do not know the end," akin to "sue wa shi shirazu" in poem 2985 in this book.
Line three, "uruwashimi," means "out of love," read "uruwashimi" in the kana line.
Line four, "kimi ni taguite," means "close beside you," the same line as in poem 3010 in this book.
Line five, "yamaji koekinu," means "I have crossed the mountain road."
