Past the great mountain
of the snowy land of Koshi
I shall travel on;
on what day, I wonder, will
I see my home again

Once I have passed the great mountain of snowy Koshi, on what day will I see my home again?
Commentary
Book Twelve Thoughts Arising on Journeys 3153

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Thoughts Arising on Journeys"
Traveling far over the great mountain of snowy Koshi, the poet wonders when home will be seen again. The deep-snow mountain of the northern provinces impresses on us the hardship of a journey far from home.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.

Line one, "miyuki furu," means "where snow falls," "mi" being honorific.
Line two, "Koshi no ōyama," means "the great mountain of Koshi," though which mountain is meant is debated.
Line three, "yukisugite," means "passing beyond."
Line four, "izure no hi ni ka," means "on what day?", with "ka" a question concluded by the attributive "mu" in line five.
Line five, "waga sato o mimu," means "will I see my home?", thinking of home from a journey to the distant north.
