Book Twelve Thoughts Arising on Journeys 3168
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Thoughts Arising on Journeys"
Using the fine sand of Mawaka Bay as an introduction, the poet sings of a longing without pause and without regard to the hour. It shares its final line with poems 3087 and 3088 in this book, so a phrase from the bird poems in "Expressing Thoughts through Things" is repeated in a travel poem.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "koromode no," the sleeves, is taken as a pillow word for "Mawaka," which shares the sound "ma."
Line two, "Mawaka no ura no," is taken to mean Waka Bay in Wakayama City.
Line three, "managotsuchi," means "fine sandy ground," and the lines up to here form an introduction leading through the repeated "ma" sound to "ma naku."
Line four, "ma naku toki nashi," means "without pause, at any hour," the same line as in poem 3088 in this book.
Line five, "aga kouraku wa," means "in my longing," the same final line as poems 3087 and 3088 in this book.
