Book Twelve Poems Lamenting Parting 3180
Headnote: "Poems Lamenting Parting"
A woman longs in vain every morning for a man who left as if without a care. The headnote, "Poems Lamenting Parting," marks a category of poems on the sorrow of partings, such as when someone sets out on a journey.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "ura mo naku," means "without a care," a phrase also found in poem 2968 in this book.
Line two, "inishi kimi yue," means "for you who went away."
Line three, "asana sana," means "morning after morning."
Line four, "motona zo kouru," means "I long helplessly," with "zo" concluded by the attributive "kouru."
Line five, "au to wa nakedo," means "though we never meet," breaking off to leave a sense of futility.
