cold and fitful autumn rain,
are you getting wet
as you travel on, my love,
or sheltering at an inn

Commentary
Book Twelve Dialogue Poems 3213

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Dialogue Poems"
A woman worries about her lover on his journey, wondering whether he is traveling on, soaked by the tenth month's showers, or has found an inn. With the man's reply in the next poem, it forms a question-and-answer pair.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.

Line one, "kamunazuki," is the tenth lunar month, read "kamunazuki" in the kana line. The next poem answers with the same opening.
Line two, "shigure no ame ni," means "in the passing showers" of late autumn and early winter.
Line three, "nuretsutsu ka," means "getting soaked?", with "ka" a question.
Line four, "kimi ga yukuramu," means "are you traveling on," and the poem pauses here.
Line five, "yado ka karuramu," means "or are you borrowing lodging?", pairing with line four.
