Book Twelve Dialogue Poems 3215
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Dialogue Poems"
A man, finding the parting of sleeves too hard to bear, delays his departure by ship and lodges on the beach at Aratsu. With the woman's reply in the next poem, it forms a question-and-answer pair.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "shirotae no," is a pillow word for "sode," sleeve.
Line two, "sode no wakare o," means "the parting of sleeves," the same line as in poem 3182 in this book.
Line three, "katami shite," means "finding it hard."
Line four, "Aratsu no hama ni," means "on the beach at Aratsu" in Fukuoka City, a port of departure from Tsukushi. Aratsu also appears in the next poems, 3216 and 3217.
Line five, "yadori suru kamo," means "I am lodging here."
