English Translation
Morning after morning
I go out and gaze toward
the land of Tsukushi,
and only weep aloud,
for there is nothing to be done
Meaning
Morning after morning I go out and gaze toward Tsukushi, and can only weep aloud, for there is nothing I can do.
Commentary
Book Twelve Dialogue Poems 3218

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Dialogue Poems"
A man who has returned to the capital sings that every morning he gazes toward Tsukushi and weeps aloud for the woman he left behind. In response to the woman's call in the preceding poem, it voices the man's grief after parting.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.

Line one, "asana sana," means "morning after morning," the same opening as poems 3041 and 3180 in this book.
Line two, "Tsukushi no kata o," means "toward Tsukushi," where the woman he parted from remains.
Line three, "idemitsutsu," means "going out and gazing."
Line four, "ne nomi zo aga naku," means "I only weep aloud," a hypermetric line of eight syllables, and the poem pauses here.
Line five, "ita mo subenami," means "for there is utterly nothing to be done," the same words as "ita mo subenashi" in poem 2902 in this book.
