Book Fourteen Azuma Poems 3358
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Sōmon (Love Exchanges)"
The time lying together was as short as a bead cord, the singer says, but the longing is as violent as the roaring stream of Fuji. Brevity and intensity are set side by side in parallel phrases, and the grand scene of Fuji is laid over the magnitude of love.
The left note gives two variants. One book reads "makanashimi nuraku wa shikeraku sanaraku wa Izu no takane no narusawa nasu yo"; another reads "aeraku wa tama no o shikeya kouraku wa Fuji no takane ni furu yuki nasu mo." These suggest the song was reworked as folk song from place to place.
The poet is unknown. The Azuma uta are thought to have been sung among the people of the eastern provinces, and they are marked by plain, open-hearted expression mixed with local dialect.
First line, "sanuraku wa": "Raku" turns a verb into "the fact of doing," so the phrase means "the sleeping together." It parallels "kouraku wa" in the third line.
Second line, "tama no o bakari": The short length of a cord stringing beads, a figure for a very brief time.
Third line, "kouraku wa": This pairs with the first line, contrasting the short tryst with a long and fierce longing.
Fourth line, "fuji no takane no": As the close of the Suruga poems, Fuji is sung once more; this is the last of the Fuji poems that began with 3355.
Final line, "narusawa no goto": "Narusawa" is said to mean a loudly rushing stream near the summit, or the rumbling of eruptions. "Goto" is the stem of "gotoshi," ending the poem on a simile, close to a noun ending.
