Book Fourteen Azuma Poems 3516
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Sōmon (Love Exchanges)"
On the peaks of Tsushima, where he has gone as a frontier guard, no low clouds hang, so the singer will watch the clouds trailing over Mount Kamu and remember home. It is as if he were carrying out, in far Tsushima, the "remember me while watching the clouds" urged in the preceding poem.
It is one of the love exchanges and the seventh in the cloud sequence. Tsushima was where frontier guards were sent, and this is thought to be a frontier guard's poem from the east. The preceding poem ends "mitsutsu shinowase" and this one "mitsutsu shinowamo," forming a pair of urging and answering.
The poet is unknown. The Azuma uta are thought to have been sung among the people of the eastern provinces, and they are marked by plain, open-hearted expression mixed with local dialect.
First line, "tsushima no ne wa": The peaks of Tsushima; the line is hypermetric with six syllables.
Second line, "shitagumo aranau": "Shitagumo" are low clouds, and "nau" is an eastern negative; the line is hypermetric with eight syllables.
Third line, "kamu no ne ni": "Kamu no ne" is thought to be a mountain of Tsushima, though its location is unsettled.
Fourth line, "tanabiku kumo o": Trailing clouds, the same words as "tanabiku kumo" in 3511.
Final line, "mitsutsu shinowamo": "Shinowamo" is an eastern form of "shinowamu," answering "shinowase" in the preceding poem.
