Book Fourteen Azuma Poems 3538
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Sōmon (Love Exchanges)"
Unable to cross the broad bridge on horseback, the singer sends only his heart to his beloved while he himself stays behind. The frustration of a heart that can travel when the body cannot is expressed.
It is one of the love exchanges, as the horse poems continue. The left note gives a variant opening from another book: "obayashi ni koma o hasasage."
The poet is unknown. The Azuma uta are thought to have been sung among the people of the eastern provinces, and they are marked by plain, open-hearted expression mixed with local dialect.
First line, "hirohashi o": "Hirohashi" is thought to be a wide bridge of logs laid side by side.
Second line, "uma koshigane te": "Gane te" is an eastern form of "kanete": unable to cross.
Third line, "kokoro nomi": "Only my heart," setting heart against body.
Fourth line, "imogari yarite": "Gari" means to where someone is, the same word as "wagari" in 3536.
Final line, "wa wa koko ni shite": "While I stay here," ending with the body left behind.
