Commentary
Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3582

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The envoys sent to Silla grieve at parting and exchange poems, express their sorrowful feelings on the sea route, and recite old poems suited to the places they pass"
The wife wishes, almost in prayer, for the safety and swift return of her husband as he sets out upon the rough sea. In unadorned words, she simply and frankly voices her wish for his safety. The closing "haya kaerimase" reappears in the latter half of this book in 3747 and 3748, where Sano no Otogami no Otome calls to her exiled husband, so that the two halves of the book answer each other as songs of waiting women.
The first half of this book gathers the poems of the embassy sent to Silla in the eighth year of Tenpyō (736), arranged in the order of the journey from the departure at Naniwa to the return. A left note reads "the above eleven poems are an exchange," and these opening eleven poems are the parting exchanges between the envoys and their wives before departure. None of the authors is named.

First line, "ōbune o": the great ship carrying the embassy.
Second line, "arumi ni idashi": "arumi" is a contraction of "araumi," the rough sea.
Third line, "imasu kimi": "imasu" is an honorific for "go": you who are departing. The lines up to here form an address.
Fourth line, "tsutsumu koto naku": "tsutsumu" means to meet with hindrance or misfortune; hence, without mishap, safe and sound. In the next poem, 3583, the husband answers with the word "sawari" (hindrance).
Fifth line, "haya kaerimase": "mase" is the imperative of the honorific "masu": please come home soon.
