the cords of that robe
how could I ever untie

My dear wife gave me this robe, telling me to wear it close against my skin; how could I ever untie its cords?
Commentary
Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3585

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The envoys sent to Silla grieve at parting and exchange poems, express their sorrowful feelings on the sea route, and recite old poems suited to the places they pass"
Taking up his wife's words in the preceding poem, the husband vows never to untie the cords of the robe she gave him. Leaving untied, until reunion, the cords each had tied for the other was a promise of faithfulness while apart. He restates her "shita ni o kimase" as "shita ni mo kiyo to," answering her heart.
The first half of this book gathers the poems of the embassy sent to Silla in the eighth year of Tenpyō (736), arranged in the order of the journey from the departure at Naniwa to the return. A left note reads "the above eleven poems are an exchange," and these opening eleven poems are the parting exchanges between the envoys and their wives before departure. None of the authors is named.

First line, "wagimoko ga": "wagimoko" is a contraction of "waga imoko," an affectionate name for his dear wife.
Second line, "shita ni mo kiyo to": a restatement of "shita ni o kimase" from the preceding poem, 3584, quoting his wife's words.
Third line, "okuritaru": "taru" is the attributive of the perfective "tari": which she gave me.
Fourth line, "koromo no himo o": the cords tying the front of a robe; parting lovers tied them for each other and were not to untie them until they met again.
Fifth line, "are tokame ya mo": "ya mo" is rhetorical: how could I untie them? He firmly vows he never will.
