Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3592
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The envoys sent to Silla grieve at parting and exchange poems, express their sorrowful feelings on the sea route, and recite old poems suited to the places they pass"
Anticipating the nights of the voyage now beginning, he calls on the offshore wind not to blow fiercely. In the last line he adds the reason: there is no wife's warmth to shield him from the wind's chill. Later, in 3616, composed at Kazahaya Bay, he wishes on the contrary that the offshore wind would blow hard so that he might be wrapped in the mist of his wife's sighs; the wishes addressed to the same offshore wind form a reversed composition.
A left note reads "the above three poems were composed on the point of departure"; the three poems from 3591 to 3593 were made as the moment of setting out drew near. The author is not named.
First line, "unahara ni": upon the wide open sea.
Second line, "ukine semu yo wa": "ukine" means sleeping afloat on the waves aboard ship; "mu" is the attributive of the auxiliary of conjecture.
Third line, "okitsukaze": "tsu" is an old attributive particle: the wind blowing from the offing. Here he addresses the wind.
Fourth line, "itaku na fuki so": "na ... so" expresses prohibition: do not blow so fiercely. The poem breaks after the fourth line.
Fifth line, "imo mo aranaku ni": "naku" is the nominalized negative and "ni" exclamatory: since my wife is not here. The same last line appears in 3718 of this book, made at Ieshima on the way home, so that the lament for the absent wife answers between the outward and return voyages.
