Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3594
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The envoys sent to Silla grieve at parting and exchange poems, express their sorrowful feelings on the sea route, and recite old poems suited to the places they pass"
He regrets that, had he known the ship would stay in port waiting for the tide, he could have stayed longer with his wife. Having hurried to part from her, he finds the ship does not sail at once; the poem captures this unexpected delay at the journey's start. The depth of his lingering attachment to his wife shows in the word "regret."
A left note reads "the above eight poems were composed after boarding the ship and entering the sea route"; the eight poems from 3594 to 3601 were made once the ship had put out to sea. The author is not named.
First line, "shio matsu to": waiting for a tide suitable for sailing; "to" marks purpose.
Second line, "arikeru fune o": "keru" is the attributive of the past auxiliary "keri": the ship that had stayed in port waiting for the tide.
Third line, "shirazushite": not knowing that, giving the reason for the regret of the lower phrase.
Fourth line, "kuyashiku imo o": "kuyashiku" modifies "wakare ku" in the last line, regretfully parting from my wife. "Imo o wakaru" is an old expression for parting from one's wife.
Fifth line, "wakare kinikeri": "ni" is perfective and "keri" exclamatory: I have come away, having parted from her.
