Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3597
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The envoys sent to Silla grieve at parting and exchange poems, express their sorrowful feelings on the sea route, and recite old poems suited to the places they pass"
A descriptive poem: seeing the fisher girls slip behind the island, he surmises that white waves must be rising in the offing. It records an observation proper to a sea voyage, reading changes in the weather from the movements of those who live by the sea. The same idea of surmising the coming of white waves appears in 3654 of this book, after arrival in Tsukushi: "okitsu shiranami tachishi kurashi mo."
A left note reads "the above eight poems were composed after boarding the ship and entering the sea route"; the eight poems from 3594 to 3601 were made once the ship had put out to sea. The author is not named.
First line, "watatsumi no": "watatsumi" is the god of the sea, and by extension the sea itself.
Second line, "okitsu shiranami": "tsu" is an old attributive particle: the white waves of the offing.
Third line, "tachikurashi": "rashi" is an auxiliary of grounded inference: the white waves seem to be rising. The poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, "ama otomedomo": daughters of fishing families; "domo" marks the plural.
Fifth line, "shimagakuru miyu": "shimagakuru" means to hide behind an island, with the conclusive form placed before "miyu" in an old construction. This sight is the ground for the inference of the third line.
