Commentary
Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3632

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Eight poems composed when passing Marifu Bay in Kuga District, Suō Province"
Wavering, he wonders whether to moor the great ship and stay at Marifu Bay with its clean shore. Whereas 3630 of this book gave up lodging there because the ship was moving on, this poem inclines toward stopping the ship to stay, so that within the sequence his attraction to the beauty of Marifu Bay sways back and forth.
According to the headnote, this is one of eight poems composed when passing Marifu Bay in Kuga District, Suō Province, thought to be the coast of present-day Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The author is not named.

First line, "ōbune ni": the great ship carrying the embassy.
Second line, "kashi furitatete": a "kashi" is a pole driven into the seabed to moor a ship; this is the act of anchoring.
Third line, "hama kiyoki": praising the beach as clean and pure, modifying Marifu Bay in the fourth line.
Fourth line, "Marifu no ura ni": the bay in Suō Province also sung in 3630 of this book.
Fifth line, "yadori ka semashi": "ka" is interrogative and "mashi" expresses hesitant intention: shall I lodge here, showing his indecision.
