Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3640
Headnote: "Four poems composed on the night the ship anchored at Kumage Bay"
He wishes that, if only there were a ship bound for the capital, he could send word to his family of the thoughts that trouble his heart. In the way cut reeds scatter in disarray he sees his own heart, troubled on the journey. This wish to entrust news to the capital leads to 3643, two poems later, where, spotting boatmen heading up from the offing toward the capital, he resolves to tell them of his lodging on the journey.
The author, Haguri, is given in the left note by clan name only, without a personal name, so which member of the embassy he was is unclear.
According to the headnote, this is one of four poems composed on the night the ship anchored at Kumage Bay, a bay in Kumage District, Suō Province; one view places it near present-day Kaminoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture. A left note reads "the above poem is by Haguri."
First line, "miyakobe ni": "miyakobe" means toward the capital, the area of the capital.
Second line, "yukamu fune moga": "moga" is a final particle of wishing: if only there were a ship going to the capital. The poem breaks after the second line.
Third line, "karikomo no": from cut reeds lying in disarray, a pillow word for "midaru" (be tangled).
Fourth line, "midarete omou": a heart troubled and tangled, the loneliness of travel and thoughts of home mingled together.
Fifth line, "koto tsugeyaramu": "koto tsugu" means to send a message, and "yaramu" to send it from here: I would send word.
