Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3643
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Four poems composed on the night the ship anchored at Kumage Bay"
Spotting boatmen heading up toward the capital in the offing, he resolves to call them over and send word home of his lodging on the journey. The joy of finding a means to send news home shows in the call "iza." The ship bound for the capital wished for in 3640, two poems before, here appears in reality before his eyes. A left note records a variant with the fourth and fifth lines as "tabi no yadori o iza tsugeyarana."
According to the headnote, this is one of four poems composed on the night the ship anchored at Kumage Bay, a bay in Kumage District, Suō Province; one view places it near present-day Kaminoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Of the four, only the first has its author named; the author of this poem is not named.
First line, "okibe yori": "yori" marks passage: by way of the offing.
Second line, "funabito noboru": "funabito" are people on a boat, and "noboru" means going toward the capital: a boat returning eastward. The poem breaks after the second line.
Third line, "yobiyosete": calling over the boatmen bound for the capital.
Fourth line, "iza tsugeyaramu": "iza" is a word urging others and rousing oneself: come, I will send word. In the variant it changes places with the last line as "iza tsugeyarana."
Fifth line, "tabi no yadori o": how I lodge on my journey, inverted with the fourth line.
