Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3650
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "In the sea off Saba we suddenly met a contrary wind and drifted on swelling waves. After a night had passed we happily found a fair wind and reached Wakuma Bay in Shimotsumike District, Buzen Province. Recalling the hardship with pain and sorrow, we composed eight poems"
He laments that though he can see the moon shining in the sky, he cannot meet the wife he longs for these days. The moon is the same moon seen in the capital, and the poem expresses a sense of distance: gazing at the same moon, yet unable to meet her. By contrasting what can be seen with the one who cannot be met, it heightens his longing.
According to the headnote, this is one of eight poems composed by the travelers recalling their ordeal: in the sea off Saba in Suō Province they suddenly met a contrary wind and drifted, and after a night found a fair wind and reached Wakuma Bay in Shimotsumike District, Buzen Province. The sea of Saba is thought to be off present-day Hōfu in Yamaguchi Prefecture, and Wakuma Bay near Nakatsu in Ōita Prefecture. Of the eight, only the first has its author named; the author of this poem is not named.
First line, "hisakata no": a pillow word for "ame" (heaven), "tsuki" (moon), and the like.
Second line, "ama teru tsuki wa": the moon shining in the sky.
Third line, "mitsuredomo": "tsure" is the realis of the perfective "tsu"; with the adversative "domo" it turns: though I have seen it.
Fourth line, "a ga mou imo ni": the wife I long for.
Fifth line, "awanu koro kamo": "koro" means these days and "kamo" is exclamatory: these days I cannot meet her, the poem ends.
