the season is turning autumn;
in the mountain
pines' shade, I hear
the evening cicada cry
Meaning
From now on, it seems, the season has turned toward autumn, for in the shade of the mountain pines the evening cicada has cried.
Commentary
Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3655

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Four poems composed in grief on reaching the lodge in Tsukushi and gazing far toward home"
Hearing the evening cicada cry in the shade of the mountain pines, he senses that the season has turned toward autumn. Autumn was the season in which he had promised his wife at departure that they would meet again; the autumn pledged in 3581 and 3586 of this book has come while he is still in Tsukushi, not yet even crossed to Silla. It is a quiet poem on the turning of the season, but behind it echoes a lament for a promise that cannot be kept.
According to the headnote, this is one of four poems composed in grief on reaching the lodge in Tsukushi and gazing far toward home. The Tsukushi lodge was a facility for diplomatic missions overlooking Hakata Bay, thought to correspond to the later Kōrokan. The author is not named.

First line, "ima yori wa": from now on, showing that he senses a change of season.
Second line, "akizukinurashi": "akizuku" means to become autumnal and "rashi" is grounded inference: autumn seems to have come. The poem breaks after the second line.
Third line, "ashihiki no": a pillow word for "yama" (mountain).
Fourth line, "yamamatsukage ni": in the shade of the mountain pines.
Fifth line, "higurashi nakinu": "nu" is perfective: the evening cicada has cried. This voice is the ground for the inference in the second line. The higurashi is also sung in 3589 and 3620 of this book.
