I do not long for home

Commentary
Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3670

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Arriving at Karadomari in Shima District, Chikuzen Province, the ship lay at anchor for three days. The light of the night moon shone bright and flowing. Facing this splendor, our traveling hearts were choked with sorrow, and each expressed his feelings in six poems"
He sings that while there may be days when no waves rise in the bay of Noko at Karadomari, there is never a day he does not long for home. By the contrast that even the waves, which should break without end, have days of rest, while his homesickness has none, he stresses how unceasing his longing is. Noko is Nokonoshima Island off Karadomari, part of present-day Nishi Ward, Fukuoka.
According to the headnote, this is one of six poems composed while the ship lay at anchor for three days at Karadomari in Shima District, Chikuzen Province, when the night moon shone bright and the travelers, facing its beauty, were choked with traveling sorrow and each expressed his feelings. Karadomari is thought to be near Miyaura in present-day Nishi Ward, Fukuoka, a harbor before leaving Tsukushi for the open sea. This poem has no left note, and the author is not named.

First line, "Karadomari": a harbor in Shima District, Chikuzen Province, thought to be near Miyaura in present-day Nishi Ward, Fukuoka.
Second line, "Noko no uranami": the waves rising in the bay of Nokonoshima.
Third line, "tatanu hi wa": days when no waves rise, granting that there are calm days.
Fourth line, "aredomo ie ni": though there are such days, for home; the adversative sets the upper and lower phrases in contrast.
Fifth line, "koinu hi wa nashi": there is no day I do not long for home, ending in near-parallel with "tatanu hi wa" in the third line.
