Commentary
Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3678

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Seven poems composed while anchored at Hikitsu Lodge"
Thinking of his wife, he cannot sleep, and in the autumn fields a stag has called, unable to bear its longing for its mate. In the deer's voice seeking its mate he sees himself, likewise longing for his wife, and draws a night in which man and deer alike yearn for their mates. The first two lines are the same as in 3665 of this book, made at the Tsukushi lodge; the voice heard on a sleepless night is there the wild goose, and here the deer.
According to the headnote, this is one of seven poems composed while anchored at Hikitsu Lodge. Hikitsu was a harbor in Shima District, Chikuzen Province, thought to be near Hikitsu Bay in Shima, present-day Itoshima, Fukuoka Prefecture. The author of this poem is not named.

First line, "imo o omoi": thinking of my wife with longing; a six-syllable hypermetric line.
Second line, "i no neraenu ni": "i" is sleep and "rae" the irrealis of the potential "rayu": though I cannot sleep. The same second line as in 3665 of this book.
Third line, "aki no no ni": in the autumn fields, where the deer calls.
Fourth line, "saoshika nakitsu": "saoshika" is a stag and "tsu" perfective: a stag has called. The poem breaks after the fourth line.
Fifth line, "tsuma omoikanete": "kanu" means unable to bear: unable to bear its longing for its mate. While telling the deer's heart, it overlays the poet's own.
