Commentary
Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3683

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Seven poems composed on the night the ship anchored at Komashima Lodge in Matsura District, Hizen Province, each man gazing far over the waves and grieving in his traveling heart"
A poem in a woman's voice: her longing for him will not miss a single day as each new month comes round. Seeing off one who departs, she vows to go on longing through the long months ahead. Placed after the preceding poem by the young woman, it is thought likewise to sing the heart of a woman seeing a traveler off.
According to the headnote, this is one of seven poems composed on the night the ship anchored at Komashima Lodge in Matsura District, Hizen Province, each gazing far over the waves and expressing the grief of travel. Komashima is thought to be Kashiwajima Island in present-day Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, a harbor before the crossing to Iki. This poem has no left note, and the author is not named.

First line, "kimi o omoi": thinking of you; a six-syllable hypermetric line.
Second line, "a ga koimaku wa": "maku" is the nominalized form of the conjectural "mu": my longing that will be.
Third line, "aratama no": a pillow word for "toshi" (year), "tsuki" (month), and the like.
Fourth line, "tatsu tsukigoto ni": "tatsu" means a month beginning anew: each time a new month comes.
Fifth line, "yokuru hi mo araji": "yoku" means to avoid or escape, and "ji" is negative conjecture: there will be no day I escape the longing, the poem ends. An eight-syllable hypermetric line.
