Commentary
Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3687

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Seven poems composed on the night the ship anchored at Komashima Lodge in Matsura District, Hizen Province, each man gazing far over the waves and grieving in his traveling heart"
He asks the wild geese flying over the mountains to meet his wife for him if they go to the capital. Drawing on the idea that geese carry letters, he goes beyond entrusting a message and wishes the geese would visit his wife. Taking up the poem of the goose messenger in 3676 of this book, made at Hikitsu Lodge, the seven poems at Komashima close with an appeal to the geese.
According to the headnote, this is one of seven poems composed on the night the ship anchored at Komashima Lodge in Matsura District, Hizen Province, each gazing far over the waves and expressing the grief of travel. Komashima is thought to be Kashiwajima Island in present-day Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, a harbor before the crossing to Iki. This poem has no left note, and the author is not named.

First line, "ashihiki no": a pillow word for "yama" (mountain).
Second line, "yama tobikoyuru": flying over the mountains, the geese passing toward the capital.
Third line, "karigane wa": "karigane" are wild geese; here he addresses them.
Fourth line, "miyako ni yukaba": if you go to the capital, a hypothetical condition with the irrealis plus "ba."
Fifth line, "imo ni aite kone": "ne" is a final particle expressing a wish addressed to another: meet my wife and come back, the poem ends in entreaty to the geese.
