Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3697
Headnote: "On reaching Asaji Bay in Tsushima and anchoring there, we found no fair wind and stayed five days. Gazing on the beauty of the scenery, each expressed his grief in three poems"
A descriptive poem: Mount Asaji in Tsushima, where many ships anchor, has turned color in the autumn showers. In the autumn leaves of the mountain he gazed on during the five days of waiting for the wind, he senses autumn deepening. The embassy, which was to return in autumn, has met the season of colored leaves before even crossing to Silla, and from the next poem on, thoughts move to the turning colors of the mountains of the capital.
According to the headnote, this is one of three poems composed when the ship anchored at Asaji Bay in Tsushima, unable to find a fair wind and staying five days, during which each gazed on the scenery and expressed his grief. Asaji Bay is thought to be Asō Bay cutting into the middle of Tsushima. The author is not named.
First line, "momofune no": "momofune" means many ships, showing that Tsushima was a key harbor on the route to the continent.
Second line, "hatsuru Tsushima no": "hatsu" means a ship coming to port and anchoring: Tsushima where many ships anchor.
Third line, "Asajiyama": the mountain around Asaji Bay.
Fourth line, "shigure no ame ni": "shigure" is the intermittent rain of late autumn and early winter, believed to tint the leaves.
Fifth line, "momitainikeri": "momitau" means for plants to take on autumn colors, and "nikeri" expresses completion and exclamation: it has turned color, the poem ends.
