Commentary
Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3702

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Eighteen poems composed while anchored at Takashiki Bay, each expressing his feelings"
He calls to the yellow leaves of Takashiki Bay never to scatter until he has gone to Silla and come back. Overlaid on the wish to see the beautiful leaves again on the way home is a prayer to return safely. The feeling of cherishing the leaves is the same as in the preceding poems, but this one is an appeal looking ahead to the return from Silla. A left note reads "the above poem is by the senior secretary."
The author, Mibu no Udamaro, was an official who served as senior secretary (daihangan) of the embassy to Silla; he is also written Mibu no Omi Udamaro.
According to the headnote, this is one of eighteen poems composed while anchored at Takashiki Bay, each expressing his feelings. Takashiki Bay lies within Asō Bay in Tsushima, thought to be present-day Takeshiki in Mitsushima, Tsushima City, Nagasaki Prefecture. The first half of the sequence ranges poems by the ambassador, vice-ambassador, senior and junior secretaries, and a young woman of Tsushima, and is thought to have been composed at a banquet.

First line, "Takashiki no": Takashiki Bay in Tsushima.
Second line, "urami no momichi": "urami" is the curve of the bay; he addresses the yellow leaves along it.
Third line, "ware yukite": I going to Silla.
Fourth line, "kaerikuru made": until I come back, presupposing that he will pass here again on the way home.
Fifth line, "chirikosu na yume": "kosu" means to do something for one, "na" is prohibition, and "yume" means never: never scatter, he pleads strongly at the close.
