Commentary
Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3711

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Eighteen poems composed while anchored at Takashiki Bay, each expressing his feelings"
He vows that, though his sleeves be soaked through to the cuffs, he will not leave without taking the shell said to make one forget the pain of love. The urgent wish to escape the pain of longing for his wife is expressed as a strong resolve to seek the shell. The motif of seeking shells of forgetting also appears in 3629 of this book, an envoy from Tama Bay, suggesting how the pain of love has deepened with the length of the journey.
According to the headnote, this is one of eighteen poems composed while anchored at Takashiki Bay, each expressing his feelings. Takashiki Bay lies within Asō Bay in Tsushima, thought to be present-day Takeshiki in Mitsushima, Tsushima City, Nagasaki Prefecture. The last nine poems of the sequence have no left notes, and the author of this poem is not named.

First line, "waga sode wa": my sleeves.
Second line, "tamoto tōrite": "tamoto" is the cuff of the sleeve, around the wrist: the water soaking through to the cuffs.
Third line, "nurenu tomo": "tomo" is a concessive conditional: even though they are soaked.
Fourth line, "koiwasuregai": a shell believed to make one forget the pain of love when picked up, the same as the "wasuregai" of 3629 of this book.
Fifth line, "torazu wa yukaji": "zu wa" is a negative supposition and "ji" negative intention: I will not go without taking it, ending with firm resolve.
