Book Fifteen Exchange Poems of Nakatomi no Yakamori and Sano no Otogami no Otome 3768
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Poems exchanged between Nakatomi no Ason Yakamori and Sano no Otogami no Otome"
She sings that these days, thinking of him, she does nothing but love helplessly and weep aloud. Repeating "nomi" (only) in "koi nomi" and "ne nomi," she expresses days of nothing but love and tears, unable to do anything else. Yakamori too sang "ne nomi shi nakayu" in 3732 of this book, and from the arrangement of the poems emerges the picture of the two, far apart, both living in tears. The last line is the same as that of 3777 of this book.
The author, Sano no Otogami no Otome, was a lady-in-waiting of low rank known as a nyoju, serving in the palace storehouse office; she is also written Sano no Chigami no Otome.
A left note reads "the above eight poems are by the young woman"; the eight poems from 3767 to 3774 of this book were sent by the young woman to Yakamori. The latter half of this book contains sixty-three poems exchanged between Nakatomi no Yakamori and Sano no Otogami no Otome. According to the book's table of contents, when Yakamori took as his wife the young woman, a lady-in-waiting of the palace storehouse office, he was exiled to Echizen Province by imperial decree. The place of exile is thought to be Ajimano in Echizen, near present-day Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture.
First line, "kono koro wa": these days.
Second line, "kimi o omou to": thinking of you, meaning from thinking of you so much.
Third line, "sube mo naki": helpless, modifying "koi" in the fourth line.
Fourth line, "koi nomi shitsutsu": "nomi" means only, and "shi" is the verb "suru": doing nothing but love.
Fifth line, "ne nomi shi zo naku": "ne" is the sound of weeping, "shi" emphatic, and "zo" a binding particle resolved by the attributive "naku" (kakarimusubi): I can only weep aloud, the poem ends.
