事しあらば小泊瀬山の石城にも
隠らばともにな思ひそ我が背

Roma-ji: Koto shi araba Obatsuseyama no iwaki ni mo komoraba tomo ni na omoi so waga se
English Translation: Should trouble befall,
in Obatsuse's mountain,
even in its tomb
of stone, we shall hide as one;
do not fret, my dearest love.
Meaning: If anything should happen, we shall hide together even in a stone tomb on Mount Obatsuse. Do not fret, my love.
Commentary: Book Sixteen Poems with Tales of Origin and Miscellaneous Poems 3806

Headnote: none; the left note reads: "The story goes that there was a girl who, without telling her parents, met a young man in secret. The man, fearing her parents' scolding, began to waver. So the girl made this poem and sent it to him."
The maiden encourages her wavering lover: if anything happens, they will hide together even in a tomb on Mount Obatsuse, so he must not worry. It shows her single-hearted, fierce love, ready to share even death.
According to the left note, a girl meeting a man in secret sent him this poem when he wavered for fear of her parents. Like poem 3803, it deals with love hidden from parents, but here she shows a resolve that does not shrink even from death.
The poet is the maiden of the tale; her name is not recorded.

First line, "koto shi araba," means "should anything happen." The emphatic shi points to the prospect of their love being found out.
Second line, "Obatsuseyama no," names the hills of Hatsuse in Yamato. O is a prefix, and Hatsuse was long known as a place of burial.
Third line, "iwaki ni mo," means "even in a stone tomb," an indirect way of saying they will die together.
Fourth line, "komoraba tomo ni," means "if we hide, then together," and the poem pauses here.
Final line, "na omoi so waga se," means "do not fret, my love." The prohibition na... so with the address waga se makes a hypermetric line that encourages him with force.
