Headnote: none; the left note to the next poem reads: "Whenever Prince Kawamura played the koto at a banquet, he would first recite these two poems, and he made this his custom."
The singer sees her beloved standing and grinning beside the hut in the fields. It is a bright, folk-song-like poem capturing a lover's smile at the scene of farm work.
According to the left note, whenever Prince Kawamura played the koto at a banquet, he would first recite this poem and the next as his custom. They are thought to be poems he loved to recite rather than his own compositions. The kundoku ends with a reading note that "tabuse" is how 田廬 is read; as it is not part of the poem, it has been omitted.
Prince Kawamura is a royal about whom little is known; some identify him with the Prince Kawamura granted Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade, in the Hōki era.

First line, "karuusu wa," may mean a mortar worked by treading, but its meaning is not settled.
Second line, "tabuse no moto ni," means "by the field-hut." Tabuse is a temporary hut built beside a rice field.
Third line, "waga seko wa," means "my dear one," a woman's word for her man.
Fourth line, "nifubu ni emite," means "smiling broadly." Nifubu ni describes a beaming face.
Final line, "tachimaseri miyu," means "I see him standing there." Hypermetric at six syllables, it ends firmly on miyu, bringing the scene vividly before the eyes.
