Taruhime no ura o kogitsutsu kyō no hi wa tanoshiku asobe iitsugi ni semu

English Translation
On Taruhime Bay,
as we row along today,
on this day of days
let us play with joyful hearts—
we will tell of it for years.
Meaning
Rowing along Taruhime Bay, let this day be spent in joyful play; we will make it a tale to hand down.
Commentary
Book Eighteen 4047

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Poems in which each expressed his feelings while sightseeing on reaching the lagoon."
Rowing along Taruhime Bay, the poet urges the company to enjoy this day and make it a tale for generations to come. As a woman attending the banquet, she encourages everyone to take pleasure and fulfills her role of lifting the mood of the outing.
Haniji was a wandering entertainer (ukareme) of Etchū, a woman who attended banquets and composed poems. Haniji appears to be a clan name, and her personal name has not come down to us.

First line, "Taruhime no": picking up "Taruhime no saki" from the preceding poem, she begins with the same place name. The next poem, 4048, opens with the same line, so three poems are linked by Taruhime.
Second line, "ura o kogitsutsu": "tsutsu" marks continuation, showing that they are in the midst of rowing on their outing.
Third line, "kyō no hi wa": singling out "this very day," it stresses the specialness of the occasion.
Fourth line, "tanoshiku asobe": an imperative calling to the company. The poem pauses after the fourth line.
Last line, "iitsugi ni semu": "mu" is an auxiliary of intention, "let us make it a tale to tell." Like Sakimaro's "katari tsugitemu" in 4040, it shares the wish to hand the outing down to later days.
