Book Eighteen 4071
Headnote: none. The left note reads, "Many people, from the district officials down to their sons and younger brothers, gathered at this meeting. Therefore the governor Ōtomo no Sukune Yakamochi composed this poem."
The poet calls on those gathered at the banquet to wear willow in their hair and enjoy themselves with him, just like this. At a banquet attended by many, from the district officials down to local young men, he sings of his pleasure as governor in mixing warmly with the people of Koshi.
Ōtomo no Yakamochi was the son of Ōtomo no Tabito, and from 746 he served as governor of Etchū. He is believed to have played a central role in compiling the Man'yōshū, and this book has the character of a poetic diary of his years in Etchū.
It follows the poem for the farewell banquet for Seiken in the preceding poem and seems to have been composed at the same banquet.
First line, "shinazakaru": a pillow word for Koshi, thought to mean "far away beyond the mountain slopes."
Second line, "Koshi no kimira to": "with you people of Koshi," calling them "kimira" with warmth.
Third line, "kaku shi koso": "shi" is emphatic and "koso" a binding particle forming a kakari-musubi construction with "me" in the last line.
Fourth line, "yanagi kazuraki": "kazuraku" means to make a hair ornament, here twining spring willow into a ring for the hair.
Last line, "tanoshiku asobame": "me" is the perfective form of "mu," completing the construction with "koso." Like "tanoshiku asobe" in Haniji's 4047, it sings of the pleasure of the banquet.
