the year's harvest will be rich.

Book Eighteen 4124
Headnote: "A poem celebrating the falling of rain."
The poet rejoices that the rain he longed for has come, saying that now the year's harvest will flourish even without raising words in prayer. Composed three days after the cloud poem praying for rain, it celebrates the rainfall and overflows with a governor's relief and joy, certain of a good harvest.
Ōtomo no Yakamochi was the son of Ōtomo no Tabito, and from 746 he served as governor of Etchū. He is believed to have played a central role in compiling the Man'yōshū, and this book has the character of a poetic diary of his years in Etchū.
The left note reads, "The poem above was composed by Ōtomo no Sukune Yakamochi on the fourth of the same month."
First line, "waga horishi": "horu" means to want or wish; it refers to the rain wished for in the cloud poem.
Second line, "ame wa furikinu": "nu" is perfective, expressing joy that the rain has finally come. The wish of the preceding poem, "ame mo furanu ka," is fulfilled here as "furikinu," and the two poems pair wish and fulfillment. The poem pauses after the second line.
Third line, "kaku shi araba": "shi" is emphatic, "if it is like this."
Fourth line, "kotoage sezu tomo": "kotoage" means to declare something pointedly in words, "even without raising our prayers to the gods."
Last line, "toshi wa sakaemu": "toshi" means the harvest of grain, and "mu" is conjectural, ending with confidence that the year's crops will flourish.
