Book Nineteen 4200
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Four poems composed on the twelfth day, when on an excursion to the lake of Fuse we moored our boat in the bay of Tako, gazed at the wisteria, and each expressed his feelings"
The second of the four poems at the bay of Tako, it says the speaker will wear in his hair the wisteria whose color glows even at the bottom of the water, and take it home for those who have not seen this scene. Taking up "its bed so clear" from the preceding poem, it praises the wisteria reflected even in the depths and expresses a wish to bring it back as a souvenir.
The left note reads "the Assistant Governor, Kura no Imiki Nawamaro," showing that the assistant governor responded after Governor Yakamochi.
The poet, Kura no Nawamaro, was Assistant Governor (suke, the second-ranking official) of Etchū and assisted Governor Yakamochi.
First line, "Tako no ura no" (of the bay of Tako), is hypermetric and names the bay where the excursion takes place.
Second line, "soko sae niou" (glowing even at the bottom): "sae" means "even," and "niou" means for color to shine; taking up "its bed so clear" from the preceding poem, it depicts the wisteria's color reaching the depths.
Third line, "fujinami o" (the wisteria waves), takes up the same word that opened the preceding poem, showing the chain of responses.
Fourth line, "kazashite yukamu" (I will wear it in my hair as I go): "kazasu" means to adorn one's hair, and "mu" expresses intention.
Fifth line, "minu hito no tame" (for those who have not seen it), closes with consideration for those who stayed at home.
