Fujinami o kariio ni tsukuri uramisuru hito to wa shirani ama to ka miramu

English Translation
Wisteria waves
we've made into a makeshift hut,
rowing round the bay—
not knowing who we are,
do they take us for fishermen?
Meaning
We have made the wisteria into a makeshift hut and row around the bay—do onlookers, not knowing who we are, take us for fishermen?
Commentary
Book Nineteen 4202

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Four poems composed on the twelfth day, when on an excursion to the lake of Fuse we moored our boat in the bay of Tako, gazed at the wisteria, and each expressed his feelings"
Closing the four poems at the bay of Tako, it wonders whether onlookers, not knowing that the party decorating their boats with wisteria like a makeshift hut and rowing round the bay are people enjoying an elegant outing, take them for fishermen. It is a humorous poem that views the group boating under the wisteria from an outsider's perspective.
The left note reads "Kume no Ason Tsugumaro"; Tsugumaro, whose office is not recorded, rounds off the four poems.
The poet, Kume no Tsugumaro, is otherwise unknown; he is thought to have been a kinsman of Kume no Hironawa and accompanied this excursion.

First line, "fujinami o" (the wisteria waves), again places the wisteria first, keeping the chain of responses consistent.
Second line, "kariio ni tsukuri" (making a makeshift hut): "kariio" is a temporary rough shelter, depicting the wisteria arranged like a roof.
Third line, "uramisuru" (rowing round the bay): "urami" means going around the coves, showing the boat moving along the winding inlets.
Fourth line, "hito to wa shirani" (not knowing we are such folk): "shirani" means without knowing, saying that onlookers do not realize the party is enjoying an elegant pastime.
Fifth line, "ama to ka miramu" (do they see us as fishermen?): "ka" binds with the attributive "ramu," closing with a conjecture.
