While this fallen snow
still lingers here unmelted,
come now, let us go
and see the marlberry's
red berries shining bright

While this snow still lingers, come, let us go out and see the marlberry's red berries shining in it.
Commentary
Book Nineteen 4226

Headnote: "A poem composed on a day of snow"
Composed on a snowy day, it invites others to go out while the snow still lingers and to see the red berries of the yamatachibana glowing in it. It shows a longing for winter beauty, imagining the contrast of white snow and red berries.
Yamatachibana is the old name for the marlberry (Ardisia japonica), which bears red berries in winter. The left note says, "The above poem was composed by Ōtomo no Sukune Yakamochi in the twelfth month," placing it at the end of Tenpyō Shōhō 2.
The poet, Ōtomo no Yakamochi, was the son of the Grand Counselor Ōtomo no Tabito. From 746 he served as Governor of Etchū, living at the provincial headquarters in what is now Fushiki, Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. He is regarded as the leading poet of the Nara period and is thought to have played a central role in compiling the Man'yōshū.

First line, "kono yuki no" (this snow), refers to the snow now lying on the ground.
Second line, "kenokoru toki ni" (while it lingers unmelted), limits the time to while the snow remains.
Third line, "iza yukana" (come, let us go): "iza" is an invitation and "na" a particle of intention; the poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "yamatachibana no" (of the marlberry), names the plant bearing red berries in winter, preparing the contrast with white snow.
Fifth line, "mi no teru mo mimu" (let us see its berries shine): "teru" means for the red berries to glow, and "mu" expresses intention.
