meeting you here after all—
the bush clover in our hair

Headnote: "A poem by Ōtomo no Sukune Yakamochi in response"
Responding to Hironawa's preceding poem, it says that Yakamochi, unable to wait any longer for Hironawa's return though he fretted standing and sitting, had to leave Etchū—yet here he has met him, and they have worn the bush clover in their hair together: joy at an unexpected reunion.
Yakamochi had had to leave Etchū without waiting for Hironawa's return, leaving farewell poems at his residence. All the greater, then, was the joy of meeting in Echizen, and the hypermetric fourth and fifth lines show his overflowing feelings.
The poet, Ōtomo no Yakamochi, was the son of the Grand Counselor Ōtomo no Tabito. After more than five years as Governor of Etchū, he was appointed Junior Counselor in 751 and was on the road back to the capital. He is thought to have played a central role in compiling the Man'yōshū.

First line, "tachite ite" (standing and sitting), depicts restless waiting.
Second line, "matedo machikane" (waiting, unable to wait), repeats "matsu" to show the intensity of waiting.
Third line, "idete koshi" (I came away), refers to leaving Etchū without waiting for Hironawa.
Fourth line, "kimi ni koko ni ai" (meeting you here), is hypermetric, marking the unexpected reunion.
Fifth line, "kazashitsuru hagi" (the bush clover we wore), is hypermetric and ends on a noun, taking up the preceding poem's invitation.
