Book Nineteen 4271
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Four poems from the imperial banquet held at the residence of the Minister of the Left, Tachibana no Ason, on the eighth day of the eleventh month"
Taking up Moroe's "I'd have spread it with jewels" in the preceding poem, it wishes for another imperial visit: if we spread jewels on the pure beach in the shade of the pines, would our lord come again? The "beach" is thought to be the sandy shore of the pond in Moroe's garden, and the poem praises the garden's beauty.
Repeating "on the pure beach" in the second and last lines, it uses an archaic song-like form that adds to the banquet's mood. The left note says, "The above poem: Fujiwara no Ason Yatsuka, Major Controller of the Right."
The poet, Fujiwara no Yatsuka, was a son of Fujiwara no Fusasaki and later changed his name to Matate. Known for his gentle character, he was on friendly terms with Ōtomo no Yakamochi.
First line, "matsukage no" (in the pine shade), depicts the sandy shore of the garden pond.
Second line, "kiyoki hamahe ni" (on the pure beach), is repeated in the last line.
Third line, "tama shikaba" (if we spread jewels): "ba" is hypothetical, taking up the preceding poem's "I'd have spread it with jewels."
Fourth line, "kimi kimasamu ka" (would our lord come?): "kimasu" is honorific for "come."
Fifth line, "kiyoki hamahe ni" (on the pure beach), repeats the second line, impressing the wish through song-like refrain.
