Book Twenty Miscellaneous Poems 4315
Headnote: none. The left note reads: "The above six poems were composed by Ōtomo no Yakamochi, Junior Assistant Minister of Military Affairs, as he thought alone of the autumn fields and set down a little of his humble feelings."
The long-sleeved robes of the courtiers glow against the autumn bush clover at the palace of Takamato: the poem praises the autumn splendor of the detached palace. According to the left note, it is the first of six poems Yakamochi composed while thinking alone of the autumn fields. The palace of Takamato was Emperor Shōmu's detached palace, and the poet imagines courtiers enjoying the autumn fields there.
The author, Ōtomo no Yakamochi, son of Ōtomo no Tabito, was at this time Junior Assistant Minister of Military Affairs.
The first line, "miyahito no," refers to men and women serving at the palace, the figures of the set.
The second line, "sodetsukegoromo," is a robe with extra lengths sewn on the sleeves, the courtiers' finery.
The third line, "akihagi ni," means "lit by the color of bush clover." Bush clover also appears in the poems on the Takamato plain near the head of this book, carrying on the autumn scenery of the same fields.
The fourth line, "nioi yoroshiki," uses niou, "to glow with color," describing the harmony of clover and robe.
The closing line, "Takamato no miya," ends on a noun in praise of the palace. The following poems all sing of the Takamato fields as well.
