Commentary
Book Twenty Miscellaneous Poems 4320

Headnote: none. The left note reads: "The above six poems were composed by Ōtomo no Yakamochi, Junior Assistant Minister of Military Affairs, as he thought alone of the autumn fields and set down a little of his humble feelings."
When the stalwart men raise their shouts, the stag will push through with its breast, across the autumn field of bush clover: the poem imagines a vigorous hunting scene. According to the left note, it closes the six poems. Turning from the quiet stag calling its mate in the preceding poem, it shows the deer driven by beaters, charging through the clover, and so ends the set with strength.
The author, Ōtomo no Yakamochi, son of Ōtomo no Tabito, was at this time Junior Assistant Minister of Military Affairs.

The first line, "masurao no," "stalwart men," refers to the officials taking part in the hunt. It is a word often used by Yakamochi, heir of the warrior Ōtomo clan.
The second line, "yobitateshikaba," means "when they shout and drive them out," the work of hunting beaters.
The third line, "saoshika no," takes up the stag of the preceding poem and places it in a new scene.
The fourth line, "munawake yukamu," means "will push through with its breast," with the conjectural mu.
The closing line, "akino hagihara," ends on a noun naming the autumn field of bush clover. It answers the "autumn bush clover" of the set's first poem, closing the six with the clover scene.
