Book Twenty Miscellaneous Poems 4446
Headnote: "On the eleventh day of the same month, the Minister of the Left, Lord Tachibana, held a banquet at the residence of the Grand Controller of the Right, Tajihi no Kunihito; three poems."
Pinks blooming in my garden, I will give you gifts; never fall, bloom on ever younger: addressing the pinks, the poem blesses the guest of honor, Minister of the Left Tachibana no Moroe. According to the headnote, it comes from a banquet given by Moroe at the residence of Tajihi no Kunihito on the eleventh of the fifth month, and the left note says it was the host's poem blessing the minister. Likening the pinks to Moroe, it wishes him long life and prosperity.
The author, Tajihi no Kunihito, a member of the Tajihi clan, was at this time Grand Controller of the Right.
The first line, "waga yado ni," "in my garden," names Kunihito's residence, the banquet's setting.
The second line, "sakeru nadeshiko," the pinks blooming in the garden, stand for the guest, Moroe. Pinks recur in the banquet poems around this point in the book.
The third line, "mai wa semu," "I will give offerings," with the volitional mu. The poem pauses here.
The fourth line, "yume hana chiru na," uses yume, "never," and the prohibitive na: never fall.
The closing line, "iya ochi ni sake," uses otsu, "to grow young again," blessing: bloom on, ever younger.
