like the trees, should know the spring—
this is hard to bear,

Book Two Spring Poems II 65
Headnote: "Sent to a woman around the first day of the Third Month."
The poet says it is painful that even sorrow, like trees budding in spring, should know the season and grow, while his burning love remains invisible to her, voicing the anguish of unrequited love. Laying trees and spring over "nageki" and "moyu," he entrusts the grief of love to the season.
According to the headnote, it was sent to a woman around the first day of the Third Month.
The poet is listed as "anonymous," and the composer's name has not come down to us. The text gives the poet as "yomibito mo," which is treated here as "anonymous."
In the first line, "nageki" is a pivot word joining "sorrow" and "nageki," wood for the fire, meaning "even sorrow, as trees bud in spring." The same pivot word appears in 55 and in the next poem, 66.
The second line, "haru o shiru koso," shows the budding that comes with spring, and the particle "koso" forms a kakarimusubi pattern with the perfective "wabishikere" in the third line.
The third line, "wabishikere," means painful and forlorn, closing in the perfective form in answer to "koso." The poem pauses here.
In the fourth line, "moyu" is a pivot word joining "moyu," for buds to sprout, and "moyu," for feelings to burn, and is an associated word for the "wood" in "nageki."
In the last line, "mono kara" is adversative, "though it cannot be seen," deepening the lament.
