the blossoms that fall to me

roots and all, across to me

Book Three Spring Poems III 85
Headnote: "When Lord Asatada lived next door, and the cherry blossoms were falling thickly, she sent this to him."
Seeing the neighbor's cherry blossoms drift over the fence, the poet jokes that she wishes the wind would blow over not just the petals but the whole tree. Her envy of the neighbor's flowers is expressed through bold exaggeration, with a touch of friendliness toward him.
According to the headnote, it was sent when Fujiwara no Asatada lived next door and his cherry blossoms were scattering heavily. Asatada was a son of Fujiwara no Sadakata, a poet who later rose to Middle Counselor.
The poet, Ise, was a daughter of Fujiwara no Tsugukage, governor of Ise, and served Empress Onshi, consort of Emperor Uda. She received Emperor Uda's favor and later bore Nakatsukasa to Prince Atsuyoshi. She is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
The first line, "Kakigoshi ni," means "over the fence" between the two houses.
The second line, "chirikuru hana o," shows the neighbor's petals drifting over to her side.
The third line, "miru yori wa," means "rather than watching," leading into the wish of the lower verses.
In the fourth line, "nekome" means "roots and all," a bold exaggeration wishing for the tree itself and not just the petals. In this book, poems pairing wind and blossoms continue, as in 88 and 91.
In the last line, "nan" is a wish addressed to another: "if only the wind would blow it across."
